Year of the Tiger (Chinese New Year) is 2010! 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit.
The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, opened on February 12 and ended on February 28, and reportedly set the record for the most condoms ever distributed at a Winter Olympics.
Vancouver's Coastal Health agency reportedly doled out 100,000 condoms over the course of 17 days. The condoms were supplied by the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control. An emergency shipment of 8,500 additional rubbers also came in from the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research.
Some media outlets have reported that the supply of condoms was strictly for Olympic and Paralympic athletes and officials (a total of 6,500 persons), which would suggest an average of at least 15 condoms per person - i.e. rampant sex of Olympic proportions took place!
A Vancouver Coastal Health official has clarified the matter however, and said the free condoms were available not just to athletes and game officials, but were also on the cruise ships that housed security, support staff and volunteers, in washrooms at public venues (including the downtown pavilions where visitors gathered for free concerts) and were also handed out by volunteers and made available in clinics.
According to the official, about 40,000 of the original 100,000 condoms in Vancouver were for those staying in the athlete villages in Vancouver and Whistler.
